Evaluations and Assessment Information

When your child is tested our main speech language pathologist will assess a variety of skills.  You can help prepare your child for testing by making sure that he or she has a good night's rest before and has eaten before arrival.  If your child normally takes medications please keep him or her on that same medicine schedule.  Our testing for a particular child may include:

Receptive Language understanding, showing language relationships, categorizing and following directions

Expressive Language forms and how your child uses language, including a narrative assessment

Speech assessment for articulation, phonological disorders, motor speech disorders (apraxia, dysarthria) and fluency (stuttering)

Sound/phonological awareness and auditory conceptualization

Sound and letter sequencing

Decoding and Reading Comprehension Skills

Reading efficiency and accuracy

Written Language and Spelling

Hearing screening and referrals if appropriate

Limited Swallowing and oral motor functioning assessment when appropriate

Testing usually takes about an hour for young children, and one to one and a half hours for older children to complete.  Once finished the speech language pathologist will write a complete evaluation and meet with parents to discuss results and recommendations.  Our main therapist will use knowledge from the testing to determine which program your child would most benefit from.  If tutoring or other additional services would benefit your child, your family will receive contacts for those as needed.
